Behind the words

About Jim Erwin

I’m a pastor, chaplain, and author. My work brings me alongside people navigating grief, caregiving, illness, and the questions that give life meaning.

Ministry shaped by listening

I have served as a pastor for over 25 years, leading churches in Texas, Germany, and Missouri. I also bring 10 years of experience as a chaplain and currently serve with Mercy Hospital in Cassville and Aurora, Missouri.

Pastoral ministry and hospital chaplaincy meet people in different settings, but both call for careful listening. A conversation may begin with a practical concern and open into questions about faith, relationships, meaning, or hope. My approach makes room for the story behind those questions.

Pastoral and clinical experience

I am a Board Certified Chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), and I completed my clinical pastoral education units through ACPE. My education includes a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry.

My background brings together pastoral ministry and clinical chaplaincy. I believe in listening with care, allowing honest questions, and helping people reconnect with what matters most. Spiritual care begins with a person’s own story, beliefs, and needs.

Why I write Sacratopia

Sacratopia is a place for the sacred in a secular world. Through the newsletter, I share reflections on faith, grief, caregiving, spiritual care, and life’s transitions. I write for people seeking encouragement and for those learning how to accompany someone else through a difficult season.

My writing also includes sermons and biblical reflections on Patheos, and The Coming of Christ, a forty-day devotional journey through Scripture, reflection, prayer, and practical response.
